You may come up with an event in your life where you may be in need of joining two pieces of plastics together. Therefore, we emerge to help you out on this topic. Our blog is designed to provide you with the process of joining broken, cracked, or two separated pieces of plastic combinedly. In our blog, we will be demonstrating some different methods to learn how to join plastic sheets together.

Believe me, assembling plastic into one piece is not that difficult, you may think. With some heat and pressure and some skills, you can combine the plastics and bring them back to their previous form. Here take a look at the following instructions –

How to Join Plastic Sheets Together
Gluing the Plastic to Combine it with Another Plastic
First, you have to remove the grease from both the plastic. Now, either you can wash the plastic with soap or with a custom-made plastic cleaner. Or, you can take help from isopropyl alcohol in order to clean the plastics before carrying out the joining of them.
After that, in order to create a rough and uneven surface of the plastics, rub the surface using 120-200 grit sandpaper. When the sanding is done, the plastics are ready to be glued to combine them together. However, you can also use steel wool or a piece of emery cloth. But remember to rub the plastics briefly.
Now, collect two glue components and mingle them together in order to activate the adhesive. When mixing is done, leave the mixture for some minutes. Take a look at the instructions labeled in the container so that you can understand a certain amount of ratio of the two glue components.
Now, it’s time to apply the mixed adhesive to the surface of the plastics. Take a small brush and apply the glue to the rubbed surface of both the plastics with the brush. However, you can use the tip of the needle instead of the brush when it comes to joining the tiny pieces of plastics.
- If you tend to use a solvent cement other than using the previous method, you should first hold the pieces together firmly. Then put a narrow line of solvent cement along the edge between the pieces using an applicator bottle. In this way, the bond between the plastic pieces will be done.
When the application of the adhesive is pulled off, press the two pieces of plastics together moderately and push them lightly to be in place. Remove air bubbles after that. Don’t try to push so hard that the adhesive oozes out of the joint. But if somehow it happens, take a small rag and wipe away the excess.
Now, keep the pieces together firmly in the fixed place using a clamp, masking tape, or rubber bands. Take a glance at the adhesive container to know how much time you should leave the pieces in place. There is no fixed time for the adhesive to be dried out. It depends on the quality and the brand of the adhesive. To form the bond of the plastics, the adhesive may take a few minutes or a day to develop.
During this time, don’t touch the plastics strongly. Otherwise, there is a strong chance that the joint will not be formed, and all your labors will end in smoke. So, avoid stressing upon the plastics at least for 24 hours to get the best results.
When the bond is accomplished, keep the plastics out of high temperature because high heat boils down the adhesive. Thus, the plastics return to their previous shape. You can apply the theory if you are prone to undo the bond of the plastics.
Welding Methods for Combining Plastics
Join Plastic Via Ultrasonic Welding
Ultrasonic welding is a great way to join rigid plastics together. When the ultrasonic welding is applied, the materials of the plastics vibrate and rub against each other. In this way, they eventually join together. Ultrasonic welding is a modern way to insert metal components into plastic, staking metal, and plastic parts together.
Spin Welding
When it comes to welding the plastics, spin welding combines plastics to develop a circular weld bond using surface friction. The plastic parts that are needed to assemble are spun at high speed, and the power is applied to hold the parts together in place. This ends up developing extreme friction.
As a result, the friction creates a high temperature that melts the plastics. Then more pressure is applied post-spinning to combine materials in conjunction.
Hot Plate Welding
Hot plate welding is another modern technology to create a bond between plastics. Hot plate welding, known as heated tool welding, is efficient in joining the two parts of the plastics. According to hot plate welding, a heated tool is placed near the two surfaces of two plastics. The heated tool melts the surface with its high temperature.
When both the surfaces are melted down, they come in contact. Now, the heated tool is removed from its position, and the surfaces are joined together under pressure. Hot plate welding takes more time to assemble the plastics in one piece compared to ultrasonic or spin welding. Usually, it takes around 10 seconds to 1 minute to carry out the bond.
