Top 10 Auto Repair Shop Tools and Equipment List in 2023
1. Air Compressor
An air compressor is a must for your garage. It helps to run pneumatic tools as well as some auto lifts. You’ll find a lot of small tasks for air compressors too.
In case of that, my suggestion is to have the Porter Cable C2002. This air compressor is highly portable and easy to use. It is small in size but comes with big compatibility.
So, it can be a good companion for your garage. It ensures up to 150 psi of air with a continuous output of 90 psi. Thus it will help you to handle almost all types of tasks in your garage.
2. Oil Drain and Oil Caddy
Changing oil and transmission fluid is a common task in auto mechanic shops. So, you’ll need an oil lift drain that can catch and store the oil and fluids from the lifted cars and thus keep your floor free from oils.
In this case, I use ARKSEN 20 Gallon Portable Waste Oil Drain Tank. It comes with wheels and a rear handle to easily move from one place to another. The height can be adjusted from 45-inch to 72.5-inch and the diameter of the oil-collecting filter is 15 inches.
Thus it ensures easy oil collection from vehicles on lifts. To finish the task efficiently, it comes with a regulator and gauge. You can choose it for your shop too.
3. Battery Charger and Jump-starter
Battery problem is another common type of problem for which people come to auto repair shops. So, no matter whether you are just starting the business or doing it for a long time, a Battery charger and jump starter must be there in your shop.
I suggest having the Clore Jump-N-Carry JNC660. I like it because of its performance. With almost 1700 amp peak power, this is the ultimate unit that you need in your shop. It has two 46-inch heavy-duty AWG cables. For safety, it comes in a heavy-duty case.
It has many other user-friendly features which will satisfy you. So, don’t forget to make it a part of your shop.

4. Engine Hoist
For some serious engine issues, it needs to be taken out. In that case, an engine hoist is your helping hand. So, if you are working on the engine, keep an engine hoist on the list.
In the case of this tool, I strongly go for Dragway Tools 2 Ton Folding Hydraulic Engine Hoist. This one is a good tool for an auto repair shop. It comes with a picking range of floor to 102 inches, which is enough for engine tasks.
This heavy hoist can easily be moved because of 6 fully-moving wheels. To pick up the engine comes with a 5/26-inch hook hung in a 12-inch strong chain. It will be a great companion in your garage.
5. Jacks or Jack Stands
If you offer services related to the wheel of vehicles, a jack is a must for your shop. Besides, some other vehicle maintenance tasks also need the car to be lifted. In this case, a floor jack or jack stand helps you to lift the car.
Arcan XL20 Black Service Jack is my priority in this case. It comes with a capacity of handling 2 tons while lifting the vehicle up to 18.5 inches high from the ground. I love this because it is super effective in the case of lowered cars too.
6. Strut Compressor
Working with suspensions will require a strut compressor for sure. I prefer having regular compressors at first. ABN 11.5” Inch Strut Spring Compressor Tool is the tool I love.
The tool is made to be fit for almost all types of strut assembly. Besides, the construction of this tool ensures maximum stability and durability. You can give it a try if you want. It can ensure good company at the time of suspension works.
7. Impact Wrench
For easy and fast removal of the wheels, an impact wrench is a thing you need. With an impact wrench in your shop, you can save a lot of your time and invest that in some other vehicles. Thus your work goes really fast.
Milwaukee 2753-22 M18 is a good impact wrench for this work. This is cordless so that you can carry it without any bound. Compared to others, it is lightweight too. Still, it ensures efficient performance with the help of its powerful engine. Having one of them is like getting a helpful friend by the side.
8. Automotive Stethoscope
A common problem of vehicles is the unknown noise problem. Many people come with their vehicles and say that they hear noise from an unknown source. An automotive stethoscope will help you to identify the source.
Lisle 52500 Mechanic’s Stethoscope is a good one for these types of tasks. It comes with a unique sound chamber that amplifies the sound and allows you to find out the exact source. Thus it can easily find out the source of the sound and saves your time. This is not so costly too.
9. Battery carrier
Maybe you are thinking of taking out and carrying the battery with your hands, but the tasks become easy if you use a battery carrier. It is not a costly tool but ensures comfort in working. So, you should have a battery carrier in your shop.
If you are looking for one, I’ll suggest you have Lisle 57850 Battery Carrier. It works great for almost all types of batteries- starting from a motorcycle battery to a battery that runs a boat. The jaws are designed in a way so that it can firmly hold the battery. You can trust this one for handling the battery safely.
10. Auto Repairing Tool Set
A tool set is mandatory for auto repair tasks. A surgeon can’t perform his work without surgical tools. Similarly, without the small tools found in a toolbox, you can’t run your auto repair shop perfectly.
Crescent offers different-sized toolboxes for different professionals. Among those, I prefer Crescent CTK170CMP2 Mechanics Tool Set. It is a set of 170 tools of different types and different sizes. The variety allows you to perform a lot of different tasks. The tools are manufactured keeping quality in mind. The case is also strong and sturdy enough to last for a long time.
Safety Equipment for Your Repair Shop

You should keep in mind that safety is always the first priority when you are a mechanic. As a result, you’ll need safety equipment in your auto repair shop. As for safety equipment, I am suggesting some-
- Goggles– For keeping your eyes safe from whatever your work throws at you, goggles are really important. I love to use the Dewalt DPG82-21 Dual Mold Safety Goggles. It comes with a tough, polycarbonate lens that keeps your eyes safe.
- Ear Protection– The auto repair shop produces high noise. That can harm your ears. I suggest using Mpow Noise Reduction Safety Ear Muff with Ear Plugs. It is a good one in a lower price range. It comes with two layers of professional noise-dampening foam laying inside a solid cup shell. Thus it offers noise reduction at a good level.
- First Aid Kit- In an auto repair shop, an accident can happen at any time. In that case, keeping a first aid kit near hand will reduce the loss. Use DeftGet First Aid Kit in your shop. It is cheap and handy. Everything inside this is made following medical quality.
- Fire extinguisher– Fir is not common but likely to happen in your shop as you work with different types of tools and engines. First AlertFire Extinguisher can be helpful to keep your shop as safe as possible by extinguishing the fire. It fights against almost all types of fire.

Final Verdict
An auto repair shop needs a lot of equipment depending on the types of services performed. Here in this article, I have talked about some basic tools that you must need and suggested one for each type of tool. These are my preferences.
No matter which one you buy, do proper research before buying and find out the best one. Don’t buy a tool that doesn’t go with what you need, especially when you are about to open a new shop.
