- 1. Loosen the lug nuts
Using your 21mm socket and socket wrench or tire iron, loosen the lug nuts. If you have OEM wheels, remove the center cap first.
- 2. With care, use the jack to raise the truck’s front end
Be sure to put a wedge to one of the back wheels first. With the truck in neutral, jack up the front end. Don’t set the parking brake because you need the rear wheels to move as you jack the front up. Once the front is high enough to remove the tires put two jack stands under the frame. Finish removing the lug nuts and front tires.
- 3. Remove the bolts from the sway bar end-link
Next, unbolt the sway bar and remove it from the control arm. Use an 18mm socket for this, and keep in mind that it is easiest to unbolt from the control arm rather than the sway bar.
- 4. Loosen the upper ball joint
Just loosen it, don’t take it off. Use your hammer to pop the ball joint out of its spindle, or carefully pry it out using your Pitman puller. If using the hammer, make sure to hit the ball joint directly. This can damage the suspension. If the parts are loose enough you may be able to get the ball joint out easily..
- 5. Loosen your lower strut bolt
Fit your 30mm socket over the lower strut bolt, holding the nut with the 1-1/16” wrench. This is usually tight, so a power tool may be needed. If you don’t have a powerful tool they are inexpensive to rent. Using a breaker bar may loosen the bolt, but be sure to have someone hold one of the wrenches for you.
If it is too difficult to remove, just make sure it is loosened. You must move the strut downward at least to complete the installation.
- 6. Get the spindle out of the way
With the strut bolt off or loose, put the jack under the lower control arm so you can remove the nut from the upper ball joint. The pry bar will lift the upper control arm so you can get the spindle out of your way. Use a strong line or ratchet straps to the spindle so it doesn’t move around while you work..
- 7. Take off strut’s top nuts
Next, you can remove the three nuts that keep the top of the strut on the bracket. Use a 15mm socket, and take it slowly if the lower strut bolt is off. Let the jack bring down the lower control arm carefully; the strut assembly will lower with it.. Be careful the parts don’t hit the ground.. If the lower control arm bolt is only loosened you may need to lower the arm bit; this will help the strut come out of its bracket.
- 8. Install a spacer on top of your strut
Referring to the manufacturer’s instructions, because the next step varies from brand to brand. Your kit may require you to use an extended stud on the strut bolts; others come with the spacer studs already in place. These need only be bolted to the strut.
You can now replace and/or bolt down the parts you have loosened. Do this in reverse order.
Now do the other side.
